Melia Dubia planting Pictures

First week of August was a hectic week at Savera Farms. With an army of 20+ support staff, we were able to plant 5000+ saplings. Fortunately, climate and EB supply were just right and we did not face any hiccups in this activity. This was a big milestone for all of us here and I'd like to thank all the followers for all the encouragement and many other folks for the support, guidance and advice.

Pits were dug a couple of weeks before planting. They were filled with 1 Kg of Vermicompost and 1 Kg of FYM. The day before planting, drip was started to make the pits moist to expedite the planting process.

Waiting to be planted!

Happy faces!
We had 8 teams working on 8 rows simultaneously.

Ganesan, an individual contributor, is putting the stake next to the sapling for additional support. The next day, we tied ropes to keep the saplings erect.

Mission completed..

  1. Hi,

Can you please share your experience on buying the saplings. where did you buy and what is the price. Are all the 5000 are melia dubia?

    Thanks,
    Raja

  2. Yes, all saplings are Melia Dubia..I bought it from a nursery in Erode. However, I would not recommend him since I was disappointed with the customer service towards the end..bought it for Rs 14/-

  3. Hi,

What is the planting density per acre recommended to you ? Does it require yearly culling ? I have seen here people have gone upto 1000 plants / acre with yearly thinning planned.

    Regards

  4. I have planted 8 ft by 8 ft and 10ft by 10 ft on 2 different plots of land.
You have to prune the branches as the tree grows in the first few years..
I have not come across 1000 plants per acre - that is planting density of 40 sq ft per plant which is quite close. Maybe this does not involve the plant growing until maturity. I would appreciate if you could post some link regarding this.

  5. Hi,

I know a guy near my farm who has done this. I did visit his place just to see the MD trees growth after visiting your blog. At 8X8 it sums up to 676, and he has followed the banana spacing. 5X6 and when asked he hinted that yearly thinning out will be carried out leaving the healthy ones to grow. In any case the growth of MD in plantation method was very disappointing.

  6. 5x6 is extremely close..If he is is going to end up thinning the weaker ones, why waste all the time and resources. He might as well engage in inter cropping and generate some revenue..Just my 2 cents!

  8. sir..can u plz say what is the cost of production and the profit percent that can be obtained by planting melia dubia..also what is the cost of 1 kg of seed?.was the plant infected by any pest or disease so far?

  9. It is too early to talk about profit % since the harvesting is going to be 5-6 years later but conservative revenue estimate is Rs 5000 per tree if you sell as timber.
You should buy saplings - Rs 12 is a reasonable rate. You can germinate it yourself as well but the germination rate is very poor.
Yes, we have experienced root rot during monsoons. Will post a blog on it soon.

  12. Hello,
Thanks for the posts. Your blog is very useful for Agri enthusiast like me who is planning to convert my ancestral property of 2 acres near bangalore in to small Mango orchard.Pic uploaded by you in various posts are very useful as we get lot of material in books and net but pic gives a clear idea. Also the pricing details uploaded for fencing, borewell, seeds are very useful since they give idea of the investment and also helps us in bargaining. We have leveled the land and dug the pits and filled it with some Honge leaves FYM and waiting for Monsoon to plant the Mango and MD saplings. We are in the process of fencing now.

I had a Query regarding MD, I am Planning to plant some 150 MD in the periphery. Some people told me that we need to uproot the plant when we cut the timber after 6-7 years and replant the saplings. Is this true?

Please let me know any do's, don't for mango and MD planting's

    Thanks
    Prasad

    1. Prasad,
      What exactly are Honge leaves?
You do not need to uproot the trees. Ratoons will emerge after cutting the tree.
For the dos and donts, please refer to my mango and melia dubia posts.

    1. Sorry, I do not know of any suppliers personally in Karnataka. If you go online (on agricultureinformation.com and farmnest.com ), you should be able to find some suppliers (not sure of the quality)

  14. I got some reference from District forest officer (DFO) Thiruvannmalai for Melia Dubia Saplings.
Mr. Srinivasan - Ret, Forest officer, Hosur
    Contact No. 9865564985.
Also DFO advised me that lot of private farms are not supplying original meliadubia, there are more varities in Melia family some may start flowering within one year, whereas the original one will not flower at its early stage and it is very difficult to identify because in saplings all the melia varieties looks similar.
He assured that Mr.Srinivasan is producing the original one (i.e Melia Dubia)

  15. Hi,

Since you planted 8x8 and 10x10, you must be having 680 and 435 trees per acre.
Why didnt you plant in hexagonal style? I understand that from the same area one can get 15% more density than square style.

    1. 8x8 and 10x10 are already quite closely spaced. In hexagonal style, with the same spacing, there are practical problems like passage for tractor..
