Moringa at 6 months

Moringa trees turned 6 months first week of August. So far the growth has been great with the plants reaching an average height of 6-7 ft. Regular organic sprays have kept the pests under control as well.

Flowering started in exactly 5 months. So far we have noticed flowering/fruiting in about 10% of the plants, we hope to see an increased flowering in another month or so. Irrigation has been reduced from once in 3 days to 5 days (however the quantity has increased 40L to 100 L)

First flowering seen at 5 months.

  1. Which organic sprays are you using for moringa, do you generate your own organic sprays or do you procure them from outside

    1. It's a mix of cow urine, dung, aloe vera, few country herbs, Asafoetida (hing in hindi), neem leaves.

  2. Good one, have you planted them using their steps or from seeds?

  4. I think you are talking about the same variety if the person is Mr Algarswamy. You can probably get PKM1 from TNAU Coimbatore. You probably have to buy 100 gm or so, check it out with them.
I have been spraying an organic concoction of cow urine, dung, aloe vera, few country herbs, Asafoetida (hing in hindi. That has kept them away so far.

  5. The PKM means the product of Periakulam TNAU (Theni District). If its from Coimbatore TNAU then it will be generally named like CO (ex: CO3, CO4 Hybrid Kambu Napier grass used as a green fodder. So it goes by that.

Using natural insect repellents like your Special Concoction is a great way to keep pests at bay. May we know, what are the other country herbs you are using it in your concoction, please?

I have heard, the well fermented butter milk and asafoetida (Perumgayam in Tamil) sprayed on the flowers make the flowers from falling off, meaning more yield.

Keep up the good work as usual.

    Cheers,
    Sudharsan.

    1. I use Iruku, Noochi, Ada Todai, Avrambu. Unfortunately, these are in Tamil. I do not know what they are called in English. Not heard about the flower falling remedy, but will try out. Thanks.

  6. Hi.. What is the pit size and spacing required for Moringa?

At 6-7 months how many PODs u get? How is the market? Where do u sell them?

    1. 1ft x 1ft x 1ft pit size. 5m was the grid spacing. Outer lines were 2.5 m for windbreak. On an average, we got about 10-12 pods per tree. All trees do not fruit at the same time. Currently, we are marketing it locally but hope to sell it to processors/exporters once the volumes ramp up!

    2. They say pkm1 moringa gives a yield of 220 pods per tree/yr. But you are getting only 10-12 pods after 6 moths. Will it increase by time? How much do you expect to get by the end of the year?
